Power of Combining Different Themes

Thematic Investing is attracting increasing investment flows and is based on the construction of a portfolio of companies benefiting from 'structural' and 'long-term' economic, political, and social changes, rather than short-term macro and micro factors. We base our analysis on three "megatrends': Disruptive Technologies, People and Demographics and Environment, which are showing an increasing influence on the economy and investment opportunities and tend to evolve independently from the business cycle.

Selection of Healthy Companies

Many 'leading' companies have different businesses in different geographic areas: why frame them in only one sector or geographic area? Based on this idea we have allocated each company of our investment universe to one or more of those themes and inside each of them, we have identified different sub-themes, after having screened them based on the quality of their balance sheet. So we combine together usually between 6 and 8 Investment Themes based on risk-return metrics.

Why the name “Koiné”

The term “Koiné” (κοινή) in Ancient Greek means “common”, or “shared”, and originally denoted the common language, that developed throughout the Mediterranean in the fourth century BC with the conquests of Alexander the Great. As it spread through the different territories, Attic Greek was altered by fusion with other languages, and its evolution gave rise to what we now call "Greek Koine", which enabled millions of people to communicate with each other during the Hellenic and Roman empires, and was the language of the New Testament and the Acts of the Apostles through which Christianity spread.

Our thematic strategy was conceived with the aim of overcoming the concept of classifying shares according to their country or economic sector. Common and shared characteristics, simplification, merging, and adaptation of investment themes. Indeed: Koiné.
